How exactly do consciousness and the mind-body connection work?

This is a contested issue in the Philosophy of Mind. As phrased, the question you ask is a slanted one. In speaking about a mind/body connection, you imply that there is a distinction. This is a position known as dualism, which was most notably expounded by Rene Descartes. Dualism is the idea that there are two kinds of ’stuff’ in the universe. There is the stuff that minds are made of, and the stuff that bodies are made of (that is, ordinary matter). Philosophers of even Descartes’ own time lampooned this idea because Descartes (and others) could not come up with any convincing way that these two kinds of substances could possibly interact with each other while remaining distinct from each other. Substance dualism is as thoroughly abandoned as any idea in the history of philosophy.

Contemporary philosophers and scientists are generally in agreement that what we call consciousness is something that happens primarily in the brain (which is made of matter, and is part of the body). This is a position known as materialism. It states that there are just bodies and that parts of our bodies (notably brains) can perform functions that we call mental. The various contemporary theories of consciousness and related issues are too various to present here, but I’ll recommend a couple of books:

What is a Mind by Suzanne Cunningham is a good basic intro to many issues in contemporary philosophy of mind.

Consciousness Explained by Daniel Dennett is a much larger, more in depth, more challenging and more argumentative volume, but one that bears especially on the question of consciousness in particular.

"Exactly" has not been discovered yet. The precise seat of consciousness is not yet known.

But your questions makes me wonder what part of it you question, since you are not asking in the Medical/Physiology/Psychology forum. You are asking in Philosophy. So allow me to paste some of my favorite quotes on the subject.

"Existence exists—and the act of grasping that statement implies two corollary axioms: that something exists which one perceives and that one exists possessing consciousness, consciousness being the faculty of perceiving that which exists." This is important to grasp, since it means that what is in your mind comes first from empirical reality and that there is no "a priori" knowledge.

"Nihil est in intellectu quod non prius fuerit in sensu: (Lat.) Nothing is in the intellect which was not first in sense. All the materials, or content, of higher, intellectual cognition are derived from the activity of lower, sense cognition. A principle subscribed to by Aristotle, St. Thomas and Locke; opposed by Plato, St. Augustine and Leibniz (who qualified the proposition by adding: nisi intellectus ipse, i.e. except for what is already present as part of the innate nature of the intellect, thus making it possible for Kant to suggest that certain forms of sensibility and reason are prior to sense experience)." http://www.ditext.com/runes/n.html

That is the same thing Rand said, and leads to two opposing theories of consciousness, the Primacy of Existence vs the Primacy of Consciousness. http://www.importanceofphilosophy.com/Metaphysics_RealityIsAbsolute.html

These quotes also lead us to understand that the body would work independently of "mind" but not of consciousness. Apes have consciousness, but not "mind" that isn’t fleeting, range of the moment, and an "eternal present" for them, as naturalist Loren Eiseley described it. If they had "mind," they could get out of that "eternal present," just as man did when he gained SELF-consciousness.

Which leads us to the next idea. Since "mind" and "self-consciousness" are created by the action of consciousness on sensory input, then what Rand said is absolutely true. http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/consciousness.html

The mind is in the thought, the thought is in the self, the body is an image of self; just like when you look in the mirror you see the image of your body. The connection is the desire… to be free.

Good luck!

As you are subjected to reality you need to have an activity that coordinates objectively with that reality. If in this process the need to better coordinate with that reality arises, a consciousness or awareness of this need activates so as to satisfy this objectively. Margaret Mead explains this in the need to use a tool so as to do a job. This requires some conscious activity until the job is satisfactorily done, at which point the activity assumes a mechanical role where no consciousness is needed. This is about as simple an explanation as I’ve seen.

How exactly do consciousness and the mind-body connection work?

As one…..

As author Baird Spalding says in the reference, ”Becoming aware of yourself as a spiritual being, offspring of an infinite spiritual system and one with all the powers and capacities within that system, is the very essence of attainment. To grow from the present state of awareness of himself as a material being and into the consciousness that he is a spiritual being contains the full secret of man’s attainment.’ Man’s nature cannot be reversed for he always remains a spiritual being. He can only reverse his notion of himself. Instead of doing this, he should reverse his mistaken idea that he is a material being and retain the truth that he is a spiritual being created in the image and likeness of God."

As also indicated in the reference, "Perfection does not come from projecting our own ideas but from awakening to the knowledge that it is already the established order of things.".

The Creator Himself IS the VERY pattern by which mankind was made. Jesus’ message and reason for coming to this earthly dimension was to show us, in as stark, as uncompromising, and as definitive a manner as possible, that we are as He is, which is as our Creator endowed us all to be, and that is as immortal, Spiritual beings who are the Spirit and Image of our Creator. We are NOT physical beings. We are Spiritual Beings like He is! Our Father created Jesus just as He created us…the exact Spirit and Likeness of Himself. We are PERFECTLY CREATED SPIRITUAL BEINGS, who have forgotten Who we are.

The universe is full of Truth, not at all empty, nor is there anything "absent" about the Principles by which WE or the Universe was created OR operate, ALL OF WHICH function perfectly, and immutably, without variation, deviation, attenuation OR exception for anyone, at anytime, anywhere !! As Spiritual Beings created of the Spirit and as the Image of the Creator, Himself…so are WE perfectly, eternally immutable, as well……because WE are created out of the Creator’s OWN DIVINE pattern.

We must RE-awaken to the knowledge that OUR OWN PERFECTION within this infinite Spiritual system is ALREADY the established order of things….and act accordingly.

What does all this have to do with how consciousness and the mind-body connection work?

The closest metaphor I can think of is in how the computer works with which you typed this question for submission on the internet in this R&S forum. The ENTIRE computer and the entire internet acts as a SINGLE unit to do what it was designed to do. If you think about the cursor, blinking on and off as you type, the cursor acts as the "point of reference" FROM WHICH YOU, the operator, tell the computer what to do. The mouse, with its left / right "feet" moves the cursor (the point of reference) to where you want it to go on the computer screen. The joint operation of your computer’s mouse, the keyboard, and the cursor, working concurrently with the software / hardware components interfacing the internet, produce the "effect" of your intention through the use of your fingers as you type or click (left or right) or scroll up or down the page…..which culminates in respondents on the Yahoo Answers R&S forum answering your question…..through OUR own interactive systems….

Just as your computer and the internet acts as a single unit to convey your intention in the metaphor I described, SO DOES Creation !!

……with a crucial difference between the computer metaphor and Reality. And that is……that the "operating system" in Reality is…..the ENTIRETY OF CREATION, seen and unseen….operating AS ONE…..AT ONCE…..to do so.

There is no division between consciousness (Spirit) and the mind-body. The body IS Spirit in a form we can see….not matter. The designation "physical" or "matter" is a semantic convenience similar to calling water "ice" when the atoms of water are in a lowered vibration than when its atoms are in the higher vibration that we semantically call "steam". The substance is yet water. The "substance" of the physical is Spirit, without which there would be nothing "physical", semantically or otherwise. There is ONLY consciousness (Spirit) the ENTIRETY OF WHICH acts as a single, indivisible, unit……and as an infinite Spiritual "operating" system.

ALL of Creation is Spirit / Consciousness….

The ‘individual’ self and the ‘universal’ Self are One and the Same. There is really no such place where "you" begin and where Creation ends; and similarly, there is no dividing line between a "universal self"and an "individual self". "Individual" really means; cannot be divided from, or separated from, the One Whole I AM into parts. Ego gives the false appearance (illusion) that "a part OF" the Whole is "apart FROM" the Whole. Ego acts like the computer cursor to make this truly infinite, indivisible Spiritual system of which you are an INSEPARABLE part seem as if YOU are a separate "point of reference", do you see?

The Creator’s "omnipresence" means being everywhere and everywhen AT ONCE, whether we see only the miniscule portion of His presence appreciable to the limited capability of our physical sense capacity. This means that "you", as a Spiritual Being MADE of the Creator’s Spirit and AS His Image…..are NOT separated from any other part of Creation or any other "point of reference" at ANY place or at ANY time, EITHER !! You, as a Spiritual Being, are actually ALREADY IN every place and every time…..AT ONCE, even though IT SEEMS that you are in only one place. Even before you have begun the first step (in ANY direction), you have ALREADY arrived….because there are no beginnings or endings to NOW.

Just as the cursor appears to move on the computer screen, what we call "movement" of our bodies (consciousness that you can see) must necessarily involve the continuous, impeccable adjustment of EVERY OTHER "part" of Creation INTERACTIVELY RESPONDING to our intention, thereby giving us the appearance that we are changing points of reference (moving)…across the "screen" of space / time. If you think about this carefully, how else CAN we "move", or even appear TO move within an infinite Spiritual system…..that is EVERYWHERE, is EVERYWHEN and is EVERYTHING ??

The key to the answer is to understand that God is the I AM of all….and we live, move, and have our Being in Him.

God….IS……concurrently, the "Operator" of, AND the "Operating System"….in which we live, move, and have our Being. "I and my Father are One"….is just as true of you as it is of all.. "I of myself can do nothing. It is the Father within me Who does the works". That is the truth about ALL of us. Of ourselves, we can do nothing. It is the Father within us Who does the works, too……AS US !!

I AM THAT I AM AND BESIDE ME THERE IS NO OTHER.

The Creator and the Created are one.

The Knower and the Known are one.

The Universal and the individual are one.

"As above, so below"…….as One.

God is One……God is ALL THERE IS.

Understanding THAT is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end; the "0" AND the "1" of the matter………..

…….so Who does that make us as "offspring of an infinite spiritual system and one with all the powers and capacities within that system" ?

You know Who, don’t you?……you don’t even have to say it.

The Creator is Who WE, and EACH OTHER, are !!

How exactly do consciousness and the mind-body connection work?

"I, the individual self", is really the Whole I AM expressing Itself as "a part of the Whole"……..you !!

The Whole I (Holy) Spirit…..of the Creator IS ONE Consciousness !!

"Love thy neighbor as thyself"……because thy neighbor IS Thyself !!

If God is One, and God is ALL THERE IS…..then there is no one else to BE anyone else.

I AM THAT I AM AND BESIDE ME THERE IS NO OTHER .

……means exactly that….

Consider:
Studies have shown that during periods of trauma, people make indelible imprints of experience that have high levels of emotional content The body can hold information below the conscious level, as a protective mechanism, so that memories tend to become dissociated or a reversible amnesia. The memories are state- or position-dependent and can therefore be retrieved when the person is in a particular state or position. The information is not available in the normal conscious state, and the body’s protective mechanisms keep us away from the positions that our mind-body awareness construes as painful or traumatic.

It has been demonstrated consistently that when a myofascial release technique takes the tissue to a significant position, or when myofascial unwinding allows a body part to assume a significant position threedimensionally in space, the tissue not only changes and improves, but memories, associated emotional states and belief systems also rise to the conscious level. This awareness allows the individual to grasp the previously hidden information that may be creating or maintaining symptoms of behavior which deter improvement. With the information now at the conscious level, the individual is in a position to learn what holding or bracing patterns have been impeding progress. This release of the tissue, emotions and hidden information create an environment for change that is both conscious and effective.
